FDA Warning Letters to Supplement Companies: Read the Original Record

Last updated:

A warning letter and a recall are different records. To understand a warning letter, read the original letter and any later response or close-out information rather than substituting a recall classification.

Start in the warning-letter directory

Use FDA’s warning-letter directory. It has company, issue-date and subject information, along with response and close-out fields where available. FDA cautions that later interactions may change the regulatory status of issues discussed in a letter.

The openFDA food enforcement endpoint is a recall source. A Class I recall is not a warning letter, and a recall API result is not proof that a warning letter exists.

A worksheet for reading a letter

  1. Recipient: identify the legal company, address and named products. Check whether they actually match the brand you are researching.
  2. Issue date: distinguish it from the date the page was posted.
  3. Findings: note the specific conduct or conditions described, without extending them to unrelated products.
  4. Requested action: read the letter’s own instructions and context.
  5. Follow-up: inspect linked responses or close-out information and record any uncertainty.

FDA provides a separate explanation of warning and close-out letters. A letter should not be paraphrased as a permanent finding about every product the company will ever sell.

Why identity checks matter

Similar company names, contract manufacturers and distributors can create misleading matches. Keep the actual recipient, product references and source URL with the record. If the connection to a brand cannot be established, leave the attribution unresolved.

What a missing result means

A name search returning no match describes that search, with its date and scope. It does not establish a clean regulatory history. SupplementChecker withholds a broader score while required regulatory coverage is incomplete.

Use the recall guide for product recalls and the coverage analysis for the limits of our current review. Brand pages keep reviewed evidence separate from unestablished claims.
