How to Read Supplement Labels: Amounts, Ingredients and Evidence
Last updated:
A useful label comparison starts with the serving size. Keep a photo of the complete panel and ingredient list rather than relying on a product title or the largest number on the package.
1. Record the serving
Write down how many capsules, tablets, gummies, scoops or milliliters make up the labeled serving. Then record servings per container. Two products with the same bottle count may provide different numbers of servings.
2. Copy amounts and units carefully
FDA’s label overview describes ingredient amounts per serving and, where applicable, percent Daily Value. Proprietary blends can have different disclosure requirements. See FDA’s supplement-label explanation.
Keep milligrams, micrograms, grams and any other units exactly as shown. Separate the amount of an ingredient from the weight of a compound or mixture. If wording is ambiguous, ask the manufacturer rather than making a conversion that the label does not support.
3. Include the whole formula
Record the nutrient or botanical forms, blend names and the other-ingredient list. Compare the actual formulation, not just a category name such as magnesium, probiotic or multivitamin. Identify the allergen statement and any details relevant to your preferences.
4. Separate a claim from its evidence
A logo should lead to the exact certification record. A “clinically studied” statement should lead to research on an identifiable formulation. A laboratory report should identify the sample, date, methods and results. These sources answer different questions.
5. Keep identity and purchase details
Save the full product name, flavor, strength, market, size, lot and expiry where present. Match those details to the current retailer listing and the received product. They also help you assess a recall notice later.
Put the label in context
A label is not a personalized intake plan. For a health decision, take the whole formula and other products you use to a qualified health professional. For a product comparison, use the certification checklist and reviewed blend findings.
