Compare omega-3 value

Compare two labels by cost per gram of EPA + DHA. Use your own prices and serving amounts.

Label arithmetic only. Quality and personal suitability need separate checks.

Use the same serving basis

60 capsules ÷ two capsules per labelled serving = 30 servings. Use EPA and DHA for those same two capsules, not the total fish-oil weight.

No currency conversion. Include shipping and tax consistently in both prices.

Numbers only: use a decimal point, without commas. Enter 0 for a stated zero EPA or DHA; leave unknown amounts blank.

A worked example

These are fictional labels and prices, not product recommendations.

  • Product A: $30, 60 servings, 300 mg EPA + 200 mg DHA per serving. That is 500 mg per serving, 30 g in the container and $1.00 per gram.
  • Product B: $24, 30 servings, 600 mg EPA + 400 mg DHA per serving. That is 1,000 mg per serving, 30 g in the container and $0.80 per gram.

B has a lower calculated unit price. That alone does not make it the better supplement for a person.

How the calculation works

  1. Add EPA and DHA milligrams per labelled serving.
  2. Multiply by the number of servings, then divide by 1,000 to get grams per container.
  3. Divide the container price by those grams.

This comparison covers EPA and DHA only. It excludes ALA and other ingredients. If a label gives only a combined omega-3 or fish-oil amount, this calculator cannot determine the separate EPA and DHA amounts for you.

Omega-3 formulations vary. NIH explains omega-3 supplement amounts and forms. For advice about taking a supplement, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
